My mother in law suffer Rhuematoid Arthritis, but lately it has caused her hands to really swell up. She is going to need to remove her wedding ring, which has been on her hand for 63 years. We have tried all the usual ways and now it looks like it is going to need to be cut off or else she is going to start to lose the use of the finger. What I would like to know from you kind folk what you reckon is the best way to go about this.
Many thanks in anticipation

Go to a jeweller. (A real one, not a jewellery retailer). This is a common problem. He will slip a piece of steel foil under the ring and cut the ring with a small circular cutter (it can't cut steel). Then he'll add some gold to the ring so your mother in law can continue to wear it.
I'm a bit doubtful about this method but have a look at this video

as old jim says, a jeweller will do it. I think the top end high street ones do (ie beaverbrooks or similar)
My mum had similar from arthritis in her knuckles, she got a jeweller to remove the ring and repair it, so she wears it on a different finger now.
If it's RA then finger swelling is par for the course and better to get it off sooner rather than later in case it causes serious issues with circulation which could be dangerous. How soon can she get to a jeweller?

If she is still having issues and things become urgent then if there is a helpline for the rheumatology nurses at her hospital then they may have a idea as it's likely they will have come across it before.

I've given up on wearing rings, save maybe on a chain around my neck. I even find watches uncomfortable a lot of the time. I hope she gets it sorted soon, even the thought of a ring being on my fingers at the moment make me wince.

How is her RA treated at the moment and how well controlled? If she has any deformity of the joint, that could make matters more complicated.
I sympathise, I can't wear rings or watches because of RA. I think the only way is to have it professionally cut off.

This is to say that I tried the method suggested by Robinia and it worked an absolute treat. The ring came off and is now hanging round her neck on a chain. So on behalf of my mother-in-law i send you our grateful thanks
I'm so pleased that method actually works Bentonia, I first saw it ages ago but only demonstrated on people who didn't have really swollen fingers. I can recommend it with confidence now.
