One of my nieces was admited to hospital on Tuesday and has been diagnosed with meningitis, we really did think we were going to lose her over the following 24 hours, thankfully she's responding to treatment and is making a slow recovery.
Last night I had a phone call to say another niece had been rushed into hospital, meningitis again.
These two girls (?) One 18 the other 39 haven't seen each other for months, is there a 'lot of it' about at the moment or were they both very unlucky. Also how catching is it?

I will assume for the purpose of my answer, that they have viral or bacterial meningitis.

Yes, it is transmittable by saliva, kissing, coughing and sneezing......infectious indeed, but not as infectious as the "common cold"

I would suggest that they were both unlucky, being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
