I have recently taken up running and cycling.

When I run I get a burning pain in my chest, after I get home I become wheezy in the chest for a few hours but this does not happen when I cycle. I do about 1/2 hour of running one night and 1/2 hour plus of cycling another night. I get totally out of breath and sweaty with both but what surprises me is the difference in my chest. I feel perfectly fine (although knackered) after cycling and chest does not wheeze or burn ??? so what is the difference with running. I feel like I am ready to die after running but just knackered after cycling. I don't have any chest problems otherwise.

I think they just tire your body in different ways. I've started running on several occasions in the past with a reasonable level of fitness in the gym... always found the same thing, very wheezy and feeling about to die, and I'd feel rough the rest of the day. I'd always end up giving up on it after a week.
Then someone suggested I run with someone else a couple of times: keeping up a conversation forces you to slow down your pace so you can talk. It was slower but I could keep up the pace for much much longer and didn't feel exhausted when I got home. I've kept it up for a good couple of months now and am slowly getting faster. Just try running a bit slower i reckon, build up the 'running' stamina and time and then build up speed.

Hi Top Totty - perhaps you are doing too much too soon & need to gradually build up to doing certain strenuous exercises.

When I swim, do yoga, walk on the level or cycle, I don't have any problems. However, I have had to give up aqua aerobics, running & any strenuous keep fit exercises as this makes me breathless (but not wheezey), my heart races & I get pains down my upper arms.

I have been diagnosed with Wolfe, Parkinson, White, which is an extra electrical connection in the heart. I have an appointment to have an ablation procedure in December, which will hopefully regulate my heartbeat.

I'm not implying that you have a problem, but it might be best to consult your GP if your problem persists, especially after gradually building up your strength! Good luck.

Get yourself a heart rate monitor, this will help to keep your heart rate within the appropriate zone for your age and weight. it'll also help you to stop putting too much effort in - ie putting the right amount of effort in so that you don't over exert yourself to the point of having chest issues. I found that this helped me when I first started exercising again... it stopped me from peaking and then feeling too sick to continue...... Polar are the best brands - although expensive, they are well worth it.
