is it bleeding?
Straighten out a paper clip warm it up with a match and dab it on the damaged nail to make a hole in it but be carefull when you get through the nail the blood and puss squirts all over the plcae but once the pressure is released the throbbing soon stops
I have done the same thing exactly, dotty. I lost 2 nails. Took hours for the throbbing to stop - made me nauseous - excruciating pain does not describe it. I just let things take their time. Oh - I might have had a few cognacs once I got home.
OOhh paddywak that sounds really painful more than it already is I reckon. I would bathe it in cold water for a while. And put it in the accident book dotty.
Gran it if you do it right it doesn't hurt at all it was standard treatment at the pit where every shift resulted in 2-3 black nails. Get the clip red hot and it actually melts the nail which is dead anyway, before it gets near the flesh below

sounds abit scary. I'll wait a bit longer, i did this at about midday and the pain has not stopped
Pardon gran? Dotty should leave her finger in the accident book - what, as a bookmark? It may have been a severe injury but I don't think it was actually severed.
If you need to go to the Doc it should be put in the accident book, dotty.

If I was you, I would take a couple of Ibuprofen or aspirin. Self skewering of the nail, I am not so sure about that given the pain and the possible hygiene issues. I would see how it is tomorrow and then make a decision about professional help.
My ex did this and the dr told him to do the whole nail peircing thing - just make sure whatever you use (paper clip or pin) is sterile - use boiling water. You won't lose the nail this way either Dotty.

it's still really sore and only stops hurting if i put pressure on it, I'm off tomorrow and so i will see if I can get something sorted.
This is making my teeth ache thinking of piercing the nail with a hot pin.

ttfn lol I have found some odd things in books, but never a severed finger.

Well trim I'm glad somebody else knows how to deal with blacknail, and I forgot to mention that as karen says doing it this way stop your nail falling off

Serious Q, dotty - how is the finger today?
As DT said - I hope you entered it in your work accident book, dotty!
