I`ve read it helps us produce the sounds needed for speech but if we didn`t have one wouldn`t we just have learned to communicate using different sounds? I`ve also read that it moves when we swallow to stop food going up the back of the nasal passages. So which is correct?

I dont know.
We dont need an Uvula.

It used to be removed in the treatment of snoring, but now this is not done.

Sorry!
I thought it was an intimate part of a lady's nether regions, but then again, anatomy isn't my strong point.
mike.....LOL......same anatomical position......close to the tongue ;-)

I remember a (none-too bright) lady teaching colleague who once announced that she was going to trade in her car and buy a brand-new Vulva.
Sounds a good deal.
My mate once told an american lady that her name was Vulva, and she believed her!
The uvula does not deal off the channels that stop food or liquid going to other areas than that for which they are intended.

It is not necessary - i have had mine removed, together with my tonsils and half my soft palate, as a snoring treatment. It hurt like hell, and it didn't work!
Oh - NOT left over letters at scrabble?
Dunno..............but their noise fair spoilt the World Cup for me..............:o(
