I would like to know what is the difference between being a writer and being a novelist?

A writer is someone who writes - and that can be anything: fiction, non-fiction, scripts, journalism, short stories and so on. A novelist is someone known primarily for writing novels, although the two terms can enjoy a degree of cross-over.
