I've always thought that the song was done by Elvis but apparently it was done by Mud - can anyone settle this for me? Thank you in advance.

Yes, it was done by Mud, with Les Gray on the lyrics. I think he sounds very similar to Elvis too. I've just discovered Blue did a cover of it aswell, which I never knew.
It was indeed done by Mud, though I think it was at least partly a deliberate send-up of Elvis.
It was a deliberate Elvis send-up, and when Mud performed it on TOTP Les changed the last line to 'Merry Christmas Elvis, wherever you are.'
.. and the reason Les Gray used a ventriloquist's dummy on Top Of The Pops is miming to the spoken bit was too hard to do.. so the dummy did that talking.
Mudd. Fab but I preferred "Tiger Feet"...
