The 19th-century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, Lee Miller, Surrealist and war photograper, and Eve Arnold all spring to mind, but there are plenty of others.
There's an article on the photographer Lee Miller at article 1314
Annie Liebowitz - photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine, plus most other important peridocals in the last twenty years. Like Bailey and Snowdon - having Annie take your picture means not that you are famous enough to be photographed, but you are famous enough to be photographed by her - an entirely new strata of celebrity!

Julia Margaret Cameron leads the way - there is a museum at Freshwater on the Isle of Wight - her old home, which is well worth a visit. She was the first person - male of female - who used the photographic image to convey real emotion. Most photographers at the time were competent chemists and merely producing a stable image was deemed skill enough. Her output over a very short time was truly prolific.

Lee Miller is another unique lady of her time and her work spans an extraordinary range with extraordinary influences - as a model, as a student of Man Ray, as an American living in London during the blitz and as a war photographer on the front line with the American Army.
