I remember hearing on the music channel the other night that Sinead O'Connor was not the first artist to record this song, and I have been trying ever since to remember who it was, I have this strange idea that it was Prince, am I right?

Pretty sure he wrote it but don't know whether he recorded it. Haven't ever heard a version by him
He has only recorded it live apparently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nothing_Compares_ 2_U

Thankyou very much Suzy, I can now ring my daughter and tell her, I said it would suprise her, then promptly forgot the artist.
Prince wrote it, and someone else recorded it in the studio before Sinead ..like you I couldn't remember who!!

The Family ~ I remember seeing them do it on MTV.

thought the bee gees wrote it??
Pippa's right it was 'The Family', one of Prince's protoge bands that recorded it, and rpine wrote it .

I have it on one of those old fashioned vinyl albums!!! lol

Sorryy, i meant 'protege'.

Hi. I believe Prince did in fact write the song. He did also record it in the studio, not just live. You can find it on his Songs from the B-Side album, which I believe you can only buy in the 3 disc "Hits" set.

prince definitely wrote it, no question. Saw him do it live at one of his gigs.

I hated that video of hers - her big round crying head looking at me the whole time.
