a sort of protest at the Peloponnesian war, and to some extent at women's powerlessness. You can google the details for yourself.
mostly to amuse people. he wasn't a great thinker more of a "spitting image" type of comedian. he also wanted to poke a bit of fun at the spartans.

if you were an academic you'd probably point out the power differentials between men and women in spartan society and the vulnerability of men in ancient greece. However, it's mostly for laughs....
