I know it's a long shot, but this has been driving me nuts for years, now.

Please, does anyone know the title/author of a particular book:

I think lots of kids (and maybe adults) started disappearing. It seemed to be a bit of a mystery - i believe someone was whisked away in the back of a van near the beginning. The upshot was that I THINK they were being kidnapped in order to either (i might have mixed 2 books up here) a) have the top of their skulls cut off and have their brains removed and/or b) have various parts of them (perhaps their brains?) put into this big tub and fed to some super-human, gross creature - who might have had tubes coming out of him.

Sounds horrid, doesn't it? But it was brilliant at the time!

Part of me thinks the author name was Paul or Saul but after researching these, i haven't come up with anything that fits.

Anyone...?

Not sure about this particular book but it sounds familiar could it have been John Saul.  Sounds like something he might have written

I agree - sounds like a John Saul book.

Possibly 'Shadows' - about an academy for gifted children where the children start disappearing and it turns out their brains are being used to make a super-computer!

Thanks both of you. I thought i must have been going mad. I've been checking through (before posting this question) places like Amazon as i was so sure about the Paul or Saul, but found nothing that really matched my memories.

I'll go back and check out 'Shadows', now. Sounds promising!

I've read a book with similar story as the one you describe. Starts with people from the street going missing , body parts being used to on old people who the doctor and his cohorts think are worth keeping alive for ever AND can pay.
Like you I can't remember the title. Sorry
It sounds like John Saul. I would say the "brain" part sounds like Shadows, but the 'limb eating' part sounds like it could be another of his, Creature'
