Penguin book

Mr Mac remembers reading a book in the late 80's which was a travel book, written by a guy who had been a travel writer for Rolling Stone Magazine. It was part of a Penguin Collection called something like Penguin Firsts (only not that) which consisted of first works by new authors - some fiction some non fiction. If anybody can shed any more light onto this, like the name of the collection or the book itself, I'd be really grateful. I know it's very vague, sorry.
