Prudie, I think that such a good idea. Ed could charge the fiver every time someone registers a user name. I would gladly pay it if it stopped these multiple-named foulmouths spoiling the site for the rest of us, and would stop the other multiple users who keep trying to tell us they are someone else.

I like the idea in principle, however, it would completely kill off the 'one stoppers', the folk who dip in to specifically ask one or two questions, get replies (hopefully!) then leave again. Sadly for your plan Prudie, those are the lifeblood of AB.

I was going say OK, charge a levy for people who post a certain number, but that wouldn't work for the troublemakers, they wouldn't reach that level before changing their name again. Foiled. Great idea though, prudie. I wish Ed would just get on the case.

So many people seem to think AB is a closed group of close friends. It isn't and it will never work if any form of payment is required.

yes i agree boxtops yeterday was terrible with a certain moron on here but it would not stop them if they were determined to cause more trouble..ps i notice the ed took a very long time to react to our reports yesterday.

Agree entirely, hc, the suggestion was only made because some sort of membership might keep the spoilers and duplicate-posters out. Not a group of friends - no very clearly not, from some of yesterday's unpleasant and pointed postings.

As I said it was off-the-cuff as a reaction to the one-offs who come on every weekend when no-one is watching it seems. A lot of times it seems to be the same people that long time users (not me) know. I certainly wasn't suggesting that AB is a closed group of friends, if it is I am certainly not one of them. I'm also not technical but I'm aware that you can register repeatedly so just banning is only a temporay fix.

Does the email to confirm registration still get sent within a few minutes?

If so then leaving it for 24 hours or more might get rid of some problem posters.

What i was referring to were temporary email addresses that you get for an hour at a time (very easy to use at a cyber-cafe), and they make it easy to register - once the confirmation email comes through you just forget about the email address thereafter (I know because I have done just that in the past with other profiles).

If the registration confirmation email was left for 24 hours then that route would be more or less closed to people coming onto the site using that method.
