Is this another condition some older folk need to learn to accept?

I can't see a solution for it.

No harm in getting an optometrist to check it out - check-ups are free (under NHS) and eyes are precious.

is this  - - looking like a St Bernard ?

or dry eyes ( for which I use HyloForte - available on prescrption too)

It's more an unprompted tear falling from the outside of my left eye.

Many a tear has to fall but it's all in the game
All in the wonderful game that we know as love

assuming that's not an obvious cause, there are other possibilities

My eyes have always watered, looks as if I'm crying.

I put it down to the years of riding motorbikes without a helmet and later an open faced helmet and no goggles

It's no big deal but it happens now when it didn't before.

A symptom of getting older, I suppose.

may be an infection. They sound treatable.
