Firefox Problem

I tried to open a link in an email (trusted source) but got the message 'Firefox is already running but not responding' and advising me to close Firefox. As far as I can see there is nothing running on it; the icon at the bottom is not in use. I usually use Chrome, though I did install Firefox some months ago, since when some sites seem automatically to open using that. What should I do to close it? Would it be best to uninstall it?

Firefox can take a few seconds to clean up when exited.

If you had closed FF shortly before clicking on the link then try again.

If not then try using Alt-tab which brings up a list of currently opened windows; if it is there then click on Firefox to bring it to the fore else you'll either have to use the task manager and kill off the firefox.exe process (which is the quickest way) or simply reboot.
p.s. this is a very minor occurrence so uninstalling Firefox is a total overreaction.
I get this occasionally.

The problem usually goes away if I wait a few seconds. If yours doesn't I'd do a hard reboot as a last resort (holding down the off button)
Worst comes to worst you can Ctrl/Alt/Del, select task manager, processes tab, and force close the one that has a firefox type name. Give it time to end normally first though.
Had similar issues yesterday when trying to update Foxit Reader. Every time I pressed "retry" it would complain Firefox was still running. Eventually gave up and force closed it.

Thanks all. The reboot did the trick. Bibblebub, you must expect the occasional 'total overreaction' from a woman of my advanced years....the problem had persisted fro 24 hours, and uninstalling seemed like a possible solution. However, all sorted now.
i made no assumptions about you, tearinghair - a lot of people of all ages think that their computer is experiencing cataclysmic failure when unexpected minor things happen (as they always have done and always will, that's the nature of software)
I sometimes get a message close Firefox or close down Computer.

My method is simple and does Not require waiting for Computer to Re-Boot, with the possibility of loosing prepared material.

Click start button as if about to close down but select 'Log-Off' and, having done so, immediately 'Log-On'.

Hans.
I too received the link from Firefox but was wary, so did something else. I tried to go back to the link, but it had gone - and so had my Norton Toolbar with its Vault. How do I get another opportunity to update as per the link?
