ummm, how can I put this??

 nope

yeah, you might find it is far too specific for a category. if AB does that, he'll also  have to create a 'satellite TV' section, 'Terrestial TV', 'Rock Music', 'Classic Music'...the list goes on.

Old time wireless and music halls or music halls and talkies.

Old-time radio may be too specific but radio in general is not. Millions of folk listen to radio every week and it's not everyone who has a TV. If it does not deserve its own topic, how about amending "Film & TV" to "Film,TV & Radio?"

Kind of a niche market. Still, it's hard to see just where a question about ITMA, for instance, would go: Film & TV is mostly for fans of Star Wars and Big Brother; Arts & Literature doesn't really cover wireless either. Someone recently suggested creating a section called Nostalgia, and maybe there's something in that.

oh hello TCL, crossed with you... Yes, amending Film & TV would be one idea, but I still think that section is so heavily awash with Corrie and suchlike stuff that radio would be a bit swamped.
morning (just) jno radio may be swamped in "Film, TV & Radio" but it's an area that does not fit into any other category and as I said earlier it's of interest to millions. I would have thought it an easy amendment to make rather than create a completely new Topic.

If "antiques" has to fit into "arts and literature" or "shopping", then I think "old time radio" can fit into "film & tv" or "music".  As for " " "s, I just can't fit any more into my answer! "Sorry"! :-)

I agree. This section is long overdue! I've got so many questions about the radio's Golden Age which won't get properly answered in the Music section as nobody there has heard of Radio Caroline or Vera Lynn.

acw since Radio is nether Film nor TV why is it wrong to suggest the Topic be re-named to incude radio? I'm not saying there should be a Topic for radio and only radio, it's just that at present, there is no topic for it to fall under..

TCL -

"Antiques" are neither "The Arts" nor literature.  Unless they mean "Art and literature".  I always interpreted the topic to mean "Plays, poems and novels" - basically anything studied at school under "English" that isn't "phrases and sayings".

My point was that if antiques wasn't allowed its own topic, then "old time radio" shouldn't be!  I never said it shouldn't fit in, IN FACT I said quite the oppoiste.  If you read my post TCL it says "can fit into "Film & TV".  They can add radio to that topic if they wish - that was my point.  I just don't see that radio, and particularly not "old time radio" needs it own exclusive section.

If its old time radio then I would say history if modern radio Film and TV.

acw (getting on soapbox) if you read MA messages you'll see I NEVER said radio should have its own Topic which is why I suggested amending Film & TV to include radio. (Gets off soapbox) Anyway it won't happen either way so I suggest you get busy and bake a chocolate cake.
For crying out loud TCL - I am NOT disagreeing with you!!!!!  I NEVER ONCE SAID your suggestion was wrong or invalid or bad or anything! I didn't even comment on it!!  Goodness me!  Don't look for a fight - it's a bank holiday.  And I can't go bake a cake - one of our ovens has a jumper in it, the other has a pineapple in it.  Someone put them there last night and we feel it may be important, so we're leaving them there.  :-)
For goodness' sake acw not the old "one of our ovens has a jumper in it, the other has a pineapple in it." excuse-if I had a penny for every time I heard that old excuse.......
the diet of the Manchester postgrad is a remarkable thing, TCL, but Nigella does give a recipe somewhere for pineapple in a jumper. And I do still think there should be somewhere for Vera Lynn questions, though I have to admit I probably won't the one who posts them. Rod, I'll be doggoned if I see the music of my youth posted under History, you young pup! So BUDDY, I think you have a point.
jno it seems she was trying to make pineapple pavlova but a combination of late nights and cheap cooking sherry meant she ended up making pineapple pullover.....
lol TCL :D - though I gather from her other posts that anna's actually been on the vodka jelly. Anyway, if you can have potatoes in their jackets, you can have pineapples in their jumpers. Perhaps my mooted Nostalgia section could also include calls for old-time recipes like this, possibly as read out over old-time radio if that's ok with BUDDY.

Thanks for the thoughts guys!  Very witty too TCL! :-) Whoever said we students weren't inventive in our cooking and only ate beans on toast!?!

jno's suggestion of a nostalgia section, (a new idea to me, even if you guys have heard it before) seems VERY sensible indeed! Hurrah for a good answer! :-)

Well you know what they say about nostalgia-it ain't what it used to be! <cue drumroll and crash on cymbals> I thenkyew
