We have had a bird visit our horses' paddock for the last few days and have struggled to identify it. My husband took a photo but it is not very clear and doesn't show the amount of white it has under its wings.

It is about the size of a blackbird but its feathers look brown on its body with a black head. Its legs and beak are yellow with white on its wings - we have searched all our British bird books but still cannot identify it. Any suggestions.

We live in Hertfordshire.

Post the pic so we can see.
Have you tried:

http://www.rspb.org.uk/discoverandenjoynature/discoverandlearn/birdidentifier/

You can input all the details in there and it'll tell you what bird it could be - the more details you can supply, the better :)
It could be a part albino blackbird.
Almost sounds like an escaped Mynah!....☺

Just found out it is a common mynah bird - just googled photos and it is definitely that species - what it is doing in Hertfordshire I don't know it has obviously escaped from somewhere.
Gosh....that's what it seemed to be to me.......but I didn't really think so....

Now, have you tried chatting to it?....☺

Well done gness @ 14:29
Thank you, Baldric....couldn't think what else it could be with that head and the beak and legs......x
Well I never! A mynah bird. Good spot, gness.
Please bear with me, but got to tell you this :0)
Many years ago Mr P and I were driving thro' Gateshead when we decided to stop for fish and chips. Mr P went in, shop was empty then a voice came and said 'what do ya want' (geordie) he said 'fish and chips twice please, the voice said again 'what do ya want' this went on for a few more times, then a man came out from the back and said 'what do ya want? in exactly the same tone.Of course it was a lovely Mynah bird. Still laugh when we think about it, thanks for reminding me -rosy
Never know, maybe someone will know the shop (and the bird-lol)
Made me chuckle, Rosy.......☺
We have a large colony of Parakeets around here( Surrey). They have existed for yonks and no one can give a genuine explanation where they originally came from. Someone said they escaped from the Set of the 'African Queen' years back.
Hope the Mynah survives in the wild.
