I saw an owl today, it was flying quite low and landed on top of an old barn, it was smaller that a barn owl (but dificult to say exact size as I was driving an only saw it for a few seconds. It had (or appeard to have) dark grey feathers, almost black at the ends, and had light flecks. it was about 2.30pm in Hampshire.

Any ideas??

Probably a Little Owl. They are often seen during the day

Thanks Milvus, seeing it made my day. though it looked a bit big for a little owl, but I guess your right.
That is so strange as I saw one the other day on a tree in a field. I have never seen an owl like that before and was so pleased. This is in Somerset. Just after the m5 junction 25.
I see a little owl regularly in the same spot by the side of the road driving to walk my dogs at about 05.00. He's not there now its so cold but was there everyday when it wasn't freezing
if you have a lot of open fields a short eared owl is a likely suspect fly mostly by day....low over fields hunting for small mammals
