My Mum is on holiday in Tenerfie and i went round her house today to find she had been burgled! :-( They are away for a while yet so i didn't know what to do for the best as regards telling them.

I think i am going to leave it until about the day before they get home. I dont want them walking into that when they arrive home, it would be such a shock, and nor do i want to ruin the rest of their holiday! Then again, i wonder if i will just ruin the last day of their hol! I suppose its a no win situation.

What would you do in this situation and what would you want if it were you who had been burgled whilst away! Would you want to know?

I agree. Let them live in ignorance bliss. Them knowing will not change a thing. So go a long with plan A....
in theory I'd like to be told. in reality, I'd want to enjoy my holiday.

I'm sorry, what a horrible thing to happen.

Jules as long as you have reported it to the police leave it till they get home, then they can sort out what is missing.
It's difficult to know what to do for the best. Perhaps it would be best to leave it till they get back. If possible meet them at the airport, and then tell them. That way at least they will have enjoyed the whole of their holiday, rather than spoiling their last day, and having them worry all the way home on the plane.
DONT TELL THEM

I MET A FIREMAN WAS HERE ON HOLS WITH WIFE FOR 2 WEEKS
WAS IN PUB ON SECOND DAY

16 YEAR OLD Daughter had a party first night they were away

livingroom torched house wrecked

the estimate at damage was 215 grand

he had a terrible holiday afterwards

ruined it for him and his wife

kids eh
My holiday in Cuba was close to ruined when my son rang me on a catamaran on a days cruise along the coast to tell me he had crashed my car in the drive thru McDonalds!!
It's a very difficult situation but in reality what could they do if you told them now? They could come home early and ruin the holiday or worry about it if they stayed. It's probably a case where ignorance is bliss so I would feel inclined to say nothing until just before they come home.
Trouble is you're in a no win situation here really.
No win really but at least if you don't tell them then they get to enjoy the rest of their holiday.

Are you able to sort everything with the police, what's missing, insurance etc... without them being back or knowing?

Thanks for all your answers. I just feel like I cant win. I hope they wont mind not being told. Luckily they only got away with a brand new tv but there is a certain amount of damage to the window frame so that will need replacing and the back door is also knackered. Its more the violation of their home that im gutted about though.

I cant meet them at the airport cause i dont drive and maybe if i can reassure them on the last day or maybe the day before, that all is in order, the house is secure and they didnt get away with much, it might just give them a little time to get used to the idea before they get home and have to deal with all the stuff that comes with an incident like this! Makes me so sick, my parents are in their 70's ! So not fair!

Ive been round there with the police tonight jenna. I have been through with the soco and all i can see missing is the TV! Everything is sorted now that can be sorted. The rest will have to be done by them now! Anything of value, they lock in a briefcase and remove from the property after having been burgled years ago and they lost everything! Once bitten and all that!

the good news is that they got two excellent footprints in the kitchen but then again, i dont hold out any hope of them catching the swines!
What a nightmare! Poor you! I dont think you should tell them till they get back! I'd hate to have my holiday ruined by that news! As long as you report it and get a crime no, so they can sort insurance etc

Many of my holidays have been trashed as my hubbys staff calling with news of gloom and doom, and it was horrid for both of us for they rest of the holiday, and them as well!!!!

Ignorance is bliss.......... (sort of)

good luck

Jules, you know your mum best, what would your mum want.

I think if it were me, I would want to know. It would also give her time to get used to the idea before she has to face the reality.

But there is a very big BUT in that answer, particularly if she is aworrier or likely to fret

I hope the barstewards didn't do much damage or nick stuff of real sentimental value. Its bad enough when they break in and take things like tv, dvd etc
no of course you don't tell them.

they can do nothing about it until they get back, let them enjoy the holiday!

My Mum will worry for sure, Like my brother said tonight, they might sit there worrying that it will happen again.
