Are you sure you want to kill the weeds???? Most birds will have a nibble on weeds and it attracts small insects for them to snack on. It also looks so much more natural than bare soil.
While some herbicides like roundup are supposed to be safe for animals, I would still advice removing the birds for 7 or so days.
Note that some of the organic weedkillers can also be harmful to birds, so read all instruction carefully.
