why is it that the majority of vets do not have a clue when dealing with small birds and won't admit as such,

professional pride?

Something like that yes. Although I must say that it is up to you to ask before the consultation if they are familiar with common bird ailments. Most vets will answer honestly and can refer you to one among them who has put more time into birds, another into reptiles etc.

Vets I know have said "its not so much treating the beast as treatment for the keeper"!
You will find VETs that are avian specialists. We take our parrot to one in Manchester and he's brilliant. I would try ringing a few 'normal' VETs and asking for their recomendations
