I bought a hamster cage yesterday and today I'm off to buy me a hamster or a mouse, not decided yet, but I'm stupidly giddy about it all.

I did look on t'internet about possibly re-homing one from the RSPCA or something, but it proved surprisingly difficult to track anything down, so being the impatient begger I am i'm off to the pet shop.

That's it really, no question or discussion and really no reason for this post other than I'M EXCITED!!!!

(yes I'm aware i need to get out more)

Oh Boo, I can understand your excitement. I was just the same when I was getting mine.
Hamster's are so cute. I used to have pet mice but they are a bit quick to escape !
My hamster is grey with black stripes and is soooooooo cute. I could easily just sit and watch him all day. He has a huge cage with loads of ladders and tunnels.
Let us know what you get !
have you caught them gravy?
Lucky you, let us know if you get a girl or boy.Happy shopping.g.
oooh nooo ..not the hamster trail !
We've had more hamsters than hot dinners !
Dear little things and very amusing ..the only thing is they don't live all that long ..we had one that lived three years but that was the longest and the tears I had to put up with when they pegged ..well !
We'll clean them out ....yeah right !
And nightimes round they go on their little wheels ..hahaha ..Good luck !!
lol shaneystar........ours is in my daughters bedroom but during the night it sounds like the whole of her bedroom furniture is being moved around !!
3 years is quite a good age, I think the average lifespan is about 2.
I agree, it's very sad when they go to the great wheel in the sky.

I got him!

He's sliver with black stripes, like yours Jillius, and so far he's managed to navigate his tunnels. The dog is agog, and Mini Boo will be when she gets home from nursery.

Not named him yet- think I'm going to let Mini Boo name him, unless it's something silly....lol
Lovely ! Ours is called Badger cos he looks like a ....badger !!
Our dog would definately have it if he could get near it, that's why it's in my daughters room.
So excited for you .
awww bless B00!! He sounds really cute!
I had hamsters as a kid and teenager and they make such good pets, sweet little things! I wish we had the room to get one, I think the cats would like us to get one too! lol

Congrats on your new addition to the family :o)

I wish I'd got one sooner to be honest Wingy, the dog's not moved for the past half hour, infact I don't even think she's blinked.
Whatever you do keep an eye on it ! They are escape artists of the highest degree ...I have spent many nights laying on the floor with a torch peering under the furniture !
He sounds very sweet ..you will have a lot of fun with him .
Bless you Boo. Hope you get a lovely, friendly little character - xx
My auntie's hamster once escaped at Christmas and she found it next morning fast asleep covered in chocolate ! It had feasted on a big bar of chocolate and then gone to sleep. It took ages to get it cleaned up. It also chewed up her new settee :-(
Congrat's on your new hamster BOO! I'm sure it'll keep little BOO preoccupied for hours, bless her!

Another little word of warning - Our daughter used to keep her hamster in her room, until one night the noise of the wheel kept her awake, so she put the cage outside on the landing. Unfortunately, it tugged at my husband's new jeans hanging over the banisters & chewed the bottom of the leg. In the morning, we found her with a belly full of denim & she sadly passed away later that day! Talk about tears at bedtime....
oh smudge :-(
Awwww :) Mine's called Dexter and a light golden colour with white stripes and tummy.

Had hamsters when I was a little girl then adopted Dennis as he was unwanted. He passed away from old age so now have Dexter.

Could sit and watch him for hours! They love a sandpit, I have a rotastack creepy castle and have one whole part as a sandpit so he can dig away to his heart's content.

Loves dog biscuits too, loves Bonio and very good for his teeth.

Have you got him a ball to run round in? Watch them at all times though when they're in it. If Dennis got out he'd come find me but most people aren't so lucky!
I never thought of a sandpit jenna. What a brilliant idea. I'm going to set one up for my hamster ! Thanks for that tip.
Dexter loves his, i just use bird sand and you can get it quite cheap, 49p for a small bag from Wilko's and I use two in his creepy castle.

You can bury dry treats in there too for them to find and it's good for the natural oils in their fur for them to roll around in it.

most of you carry on about how 'cruel' it is to cage train a dog and yet for a poor mice or hamster its suddenly ok? Double standards and discrimination is awhat I call it.
