why are robins never seen in summer time?

They are. Robins are very territorial, and will attack anything red. I've had T-shirts on the washing line ripped to shreds by them. If you dig the garden you will often find a robin sat a few feet from you waiting for worms. I think you just don't notice them due to the extra undergrowth and profusion of other birds.
We're just back from holiday on West of Scotland and saw robins every day.
