Since falling unwell a few weeks ago my cat won't eat unless we virtually force feed him by syringe. is there anything that he could be guaranteed to eat ?At the moment he sits by the fridge and just lives on bits of ham - he's not interested in any type of cat food.

you havnt said what the problem was, and if he had been treated by a vet or not - no guarantees, but sardines or pilchards either in tomato sauce or oil has always gone down well with poorly cats in the past. Have you tried cooking a bit of chicken breast, or the chicken/turkey slices they sell in the supermarket?
You could try warming some cat food. Cats are tempted by smell rather than anything else (hence the reason cat food smells so strong), warming the food will increase the smell and may bring on the cats appetite.
Alternatively, mine will always stop what they're doing for a bowl of tuna!
If you can source any Applaws cat food its really natural and contains literally only chicken or tuna so might tempt him a bit more.

My cat can also hear a tuna tin being opened at 50 paces and that tempts her when she is poorly.
My wife almost always feeds our cat and it can be a very fussy eater. It often decides that it does not want its normal dried food and will only eat tuna or breast chicken etc.
Recently my wife was away from home for a few days and the cat tried its usual eating tactics. I put down the dried food and said to it "that's all your getting, take it or leave it". The cat promptly ate it all!
Perhaps there is a lesson here?
