Is it too late to remove the old nest from the box.Blue tits have been in it already but have disappeared over the last couple of days.Is it because the old nest is still there.
Please help before i remove it.
Thanks.

Hi herons,
Ideally it would have been best to clear out the old nest back in the autumn but you sound a lot like me and dont always get around to these things!
If they seem to have lost interest at the moment, I think now would be a good time to give it a spring clean for them and hopefully they will soon be back to check out the new des res that may have harboured bugs which may have put them off first time round. Good Luck Tbird+

Hi Thunderbird, thanks for your advice but a bluetit was pecking at the box today should i still disturb them?
Just for info got a robin in my other box today which hasn't been used in 3 years.I'll keep an eye on that one.
Thanks.
Yvonnne.
Hi again herons, A difficult decision!, if they have now returned, it looks like they are viewing it as a potential nesting site and in this case it would seem a shame to scare them off.
Maybe it's time now to forget your worries and just leave things to nature and take comfort in the fact that in the wild, without a bird box, they woud choose a hole in an old rotten tree which may have been used by generations of birds.
I must addmit, I sometimes forget to give mine a clean until it gets a bit late and they either take it or leave it.
One box I have in an apple tree for the last 4 years has only provided a home for a spider and otherones get used almost every year. Fascinating to watch them building their nests and then feeding their chicks! Good Luck Tbird+
