My 12 year old male, castrated black labrador has recently started to eat his own poo! I have many times caught him in the act, he seems to have plenty to eat but could this mean that he requires more food, or is he suffering from a deficiency or worse still some kind of dementia now he's getting on a bit....I love him to bits and its really distressing me seeing him scavange on his own excrement......

Hope this helps.

high rq, hope your well I have a 8 year old westie that used to do that. shes done it for months, when I took her to the vets he told me it could be to do with 3 things either she needs worming or food dosnt suit her or shes not getting enough of her food. In our case of our westie is that she simply needed worming she now is ok and dosnt touch it now. hope this helps you but I suggest you try to pick it up before she gets to it. untill you get it saughted. hope this helps good luck.
Hi RQ. I also have a black labrador and she has a tendency to do the same and has been caught in the act many times. She is well fed and I also find it distressing but always have to watch and scoop before she does!
Good luck.
