having a discussion with husband. I have always referred to "smoothing" the cat or dog. He had never heard of that before meeting me. Does nyone else say smoothing (in place of petting or stroking)? or is it a regional thing?

scrub that, i asked it before!
I’d say stroking, but you just said scrub it so ignore me too.

Smoothing is ok too.
How is Dugee doing?

I love dogs but cats are fascinating and devious cute looking little serial killers.

he's doing ok thanks wolf!
he thinks he's a cat.
We are having a slight problem with his paperwork so holding our breath atm.
I've never heard of 'stroking / petting' refered to as ''smoothing'' before.
I've heard the term 'smoothing' used but it's not something I'd say myself.

Somewhat strangely, I've never really thought of 'petting' as something that you do to pets!

Even stranger still, I've heard Americans talk about 'spanking' their cats and dogs, which isn't as kinky as it sounds and definitely doesn't involve punishment!

When I were but a lad, in Suffolk, we kids used to 'coach' cats and dogs, which didn't involve any form of training either!
I had a scottish freind who said "smoothing"
Ermmm...I've never spanked any of my pets. Where did that come from?
I've heard about smoothing from one or 2 people down here...never heard it before otherwise.
Chris, are you sure it wasn't "coax" rather than "coach"...it seems to make slightly more sense.
What is the ‘spanking’ that Americans do?

‘Petting’ is what you’re not allowed to do in the swimming pool, isn’t it?
;)
Smoothing to me suggests you are using a hot iron on your pet.
I'll send the RSPCA.
Apparently smoothing is a Bristolian thing...

The usual expression I hear is petting.

Frankie demands a back, chin, head and throat massage at bedtime. When he has had enough he usually moves to his own bedroom.
>>> are you sure it wasn't "coax" rather than "coach"...it seems to make slightly more sense

It would have made more sense to my Mum too but she was always reprimanding us kids for saying 'coach', rather than 'coax'!
;-)
This cat seems to like a bit of real spanking!

I know the cat seems to be enjoying that, but I don't like that video!
How did he find out the cat liked that spanking? A bit disturbing.
Chris it was definitely 'coaching' which was used when I used to stay with friends in south Norfolk.
My grandma used to have a smoothing iron but she used it on the washing not the dog.
