High time we decided once and for all whether we're on our own side - or someone else's.
See also this thread, from a week ago, although the story appears to have moved on since: http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/News/Question1466099.html

It's important to hold our soldiers to account. After all, they are fighting to protect the standards of life that some of them have (allegedly) broken. But I think ymb had it largely right. This has dragged on for far too long, and surely could/should have been resolved far quicker than it has been. I think it's likely that there is some substance behind the claims, but equally many of the soldiers currently being questioned are likely to be innocent (or at any rate guilty of nothing more than making a snap judgement in horrific circumstances), so the longer this rolls on the worse it will be for them.

I hope that this doesn't drag on any longer.
It must be soul destroying.

I would hope that anything said on the doorstep which had been tricked or manipulated from the former soldiers by these wannabee *** would be ruled inadmissable as they are not obliged to say anything and should be cautioned on their rights to remain silent etc . Digusting and shame on the government for wasting more taxpayers money on a witch hunt.
Good grief. The starred out word is a slang name for detectives. Starts with DI and ends with CKS. Appropriate though.
As I sad a week ago. We must be mad. How about pursuing the parasite law firms who trawl for treasonable, tenuous cases. Every member of the Armed forces should immediately resign or refuse to bear arms.
Ever heard of the Geneva convention?
Islay, the geneva convention is designed to protect all non-combatants, whether civilian, or military personnel no longer in the theatre of battle through imprisonment, or medical reason. Since when did concert goers and restaurant diners in Paris fall outside the protection of the convention you say you hold so dear? why is it OK for Daesh/ISIS/ISIL (delete as applicable) to ignore it?
Mushroom the article is not talking about those scenarios.

Also for information, our soldiers are told to adhere to the Geneva convention.
I think it needs making clear that these soldiers aren't being investigated for normal soldiering activities or even killing the enemy whilst under the command of their seniors. They're being investigated for acting without orders outside the parameters of the Geneva convention.
It doesn't say who the alleged victims are other than" insurgents on the front line" As it doesn't go down the emotive women and children road we can assume they may be lawful or unlawful combatants. If the victims were mercenaries,as are most of Daesh in the present conflict, then they cannot shelter under the protection of the Geneva convention. It does not apply and Islamic State is not a Sovereign state either.
If more information were forthcoming as to who exactly the alleged victims were and their status at the time then it would be easier to trot out the Geneva convention in this debate but the answer is we don't know in this scenario.

RETROCOP why would they need to be telt on the doorstep they need not say anything? Unless I am mistaken, the police give that statement only if a person has been arrested so why should this be any different?
Unless I am mistaken, the police give that statement only if a person has been arrested - That's not the case Mr Corby ^.

"Some of the soldiers are not being told they are not obliged to speak. ‘It seems they are using underhand tactics to try and get these soldiers to talk,’ Col Kemp said" - If these investigators are in breach of regulations then hopefully they will also be rigorously dealt with with.

I am shocked I am truly shocked that this sort of thing should go on in any law inforcement agency

actually in english criminal procedure it is very hard to get anything ruled inadmissible isnt it ?

remember sgt Blackman was convicted shooting someone lying on the ground without a firearm whilst quoting shakespeare.... Hamlet I think
I agree with Corby the only time I was given the silent doo-dah was when i was arrested...

Good example of what the high-ups say happens on the street and what we consumers say happened on the street ....
