Just got back from a trip to Dublin were we stayed in a lovely hotel called Beckett's, the walls were plastered with Sandy Roe's face.

Very surreal, never knew who Sandy's (old) avatar was til now :)

Sandy is a handsome George Clooney dapper lookalike. .. or so I thought. !
Yeah...that would be a bit weird.

Did you have a nice time?
Question Author
We had a great time thanks, we were summonsed over for a happy occassion. I swear it gets dearer and dearer every time we go, I don't know how the people afford it.

Janbee, if only it was George's face :)
Getting to Ireland can be really cheap but the amount you spend once there it's more expensive than a holiday abroad. We don't even have to pay for accommodation.

We stay with family usually but for the Saturday night we decided to stay where we were having the meal, the hotel itself wasn't expensive but the drinks, jeez, you need a mortgage. My SIL came over to the UK just before Christmas and happened upon a Wetherspoon, she didn't know herself lol.

A Jack and Ginger was about €6.50 in a local pub, and the ginger was not great.
It's always bad when you land back in England and airport prices look cheap :-)
Is that because of the Euro? Maybe the UK made a shrewd move not adopting it?
When they got the Euro it's like they rounded everything up.

I think my liver's grateful that we've come home, I need to do that dry January.
Nah - why on earth deprive yourself of one of the few ways to cheer up the dreariest month of the year?
Question Author
It won't last long Dave, I'll probably get to about 7pm this Friday :)
Could you afford to drink back here thro January after your sojourn to Dublin?
Don't keep me in suspense. Who was the real Sandy Roe?
The pricing of booze in bars in Ireland is fascinating (and pretty predatory).

Over in the West, if you go into a 'local bar for local people' (especially if it has a bit of competition) you'll get quite sensible prices - about on a par with the UK.

Go in anywhere with a clientele of blow-ins and tourists and your eyes will water, especially if you stray beyond the standard Heineken/Stout.

An increasingly prevalent practice is also to charge almost as much for a 'half' as a 'pint' - again to catch the 'must try a Guinness' tourists.
Beckett's is a big clue, Retro.
Food prices are extortionate.
Question Author
I think I'll manage Retro, drinks here are neaarly half what they are there.

Sorry, didn't realise I hadn't put who it was, Samuel Beckett apparently. :)
Question Author
That's the thing Dave, the pub opposite my SIL is in a residential area with no tourists whatsoever, it's full of locals.

Question Author
Food prices would scare the bejeezus out of me if I had to live there. And wine, a bottle of Blossom Hill is around €9 in the offy.
Sunday carvery was 15 euros. Here it's £6.95 and much better quality.
Thanks rocky for the info. Becketts was no big clue to me this morning having spent last evening quaffing pints of Devil's Backside in my local Weatherspoon. I could only think of Thomas O'Beckett! :+)
