I just watched a man on News Night talking about how great it is to see people dieing in the name of Islam. How he wouldn't mind his own family members dieing for the cause. (He didn't say he would). The interviewer said that many didn't agree with his version of Islam and he replied I'm sure you will change your mind once your in it.

My God and they wonder why the west is so against these extremists.

This guy should be left in Afganitstan which is as medievil as it gets and see how he likes it. Being without all the perks that he has had here in the west. He was British born and bred.

The mind Boggles. I'd rather be dead than live in the sort of world he wants.

I found it rather frightening to hear really.

eupraxia, it is considered extremely politically correct to bite the hand that feeds you. As to being "in it" we all would be if they got their way, deeply in it.

yes mfe we most surely would wouldn't we.

Pretty strong stuff, huh?

Did you see the italian lawyer? That was a surprise. Suggesting that all the bombs that 'failed to explode' were deliberate failures, and it was just a 'political protest'. yah, right.

Poor brainwashed fools. They were right on one thing though...No one weeps hard enough for the tens of thousands of innocents slaughtered in Iraq and Afghanistan, whatever one's take on those wars.

And the question is?
Question Author

Quite right MargeB no one seems to weep for those poor souls. The world is becoming a sorry place.

The question is Andy What did other people think. I didn't realize I had to put that.

It's not a question Andy, it's a discussion.

And MargeB, I agree. Something happens on our doorstep (well, sort of) and we're up in arms, calling for justice etc, etc. However, how much thought do we really give for those who have to put up with this sort of thing day after day? The mind truly does boggle. Hopefully after the events of the past few weeks, we might start to have a bit more compassion for things that are going on beyond our fence, as it were. Not that I'm saying that the events of July 7th weren't atrocious- on the contrary. We just need to remember that this isn't a one-off, and it's been happening in other parts of the world for years.

ps: i never really make much sense, do i? I only ever read what I've written after I've already posted it. Doh.

I don't have a TV at the mo, but what you report sounds scary indeed.  I know there are people out there who think this, but I still can't get my head around it.

What does anyone think the "Muslim" man meant by "once you're in it"?  Was he implying that we'd all be forced to convert to his version of Islam?  I'm a bit confused.

Re: events beyond our doorstep.  You may, or may not have seen this thread.

Andy008 - not sure when you joined so I don't know if you know the history of CB.  Discussions like this were once intended for CB.  The idea being that there, there would be no need for a question in the "question" box.  However, CB has turned out...shall we say... "differently" and so the meaty discussions end up back in News most of the time.  And I've not seen anyone complaining about that yet! :-)

Our leaders are trying to eliminate world debt and if you understand economics you'll know its not that simple.

We've just had Live8 in order to draw peoples attention to the poverty in africa.

Britain gave lots and lots of money to help victims of the asian Tsunami...I gave 20 when I heard.

How can anyone say we don't care about the plight of others!?!  The 7th July bombing took place during the G8 when they were trying to make Poverty History.

That was interesting acw. I have had many a coversasion with hubby over the poverty issue. He seems to think that just because he is retiered and dosn't get that much in the way of money that we are poor. I point out that he dosn't live in Africa or any of the other third world countries, ( where did that phrase come from, it almost sounds like they live on another planet and who is the second world). We  have a roof over our heads, we have food and won't have to sleep another night hungry. My son can go to school. He will ( if the guy I reffered to doesn't get his way) grow up in a country that will give him something of a chance. He will be able to vote as hubby and I do now. He will not be terrified that at any moment he will have his house torn down and be made to leave his land. He will have freedom of speech( again something the guy on news night should be greatful for, otherwise he would not be able to say the horrid things he said). There may be many things wrong with this country but at least we have the chance to put them right. We would not have that oppotunity in many other countries. I'm not saying we are a perfect nation. If that were the case then that young man would not have died because of the colour of his skin.

My heart bleeds for the people of Iraq as I know that the hearts of many other people do. I wish that we could show them in some way that we have not forgotten them. I am a christian, although rather lapsed. I would never think of forcing my beliefs on others. I have no interest in religion but I do believe in a God. My thoughts on the subject are that God stopped being a part of religion a long time ago. His suffering is the starving and the helpless. His joy is in the love and compassion that other show. His beauty and might in the very world in which we live. I have not found him in a church in years now.

 next post.

My heart goes out to the people of Iraq as is the case with many other people. I just wish there was a way to let them know we havn't forgotten them. I wonder if the world was made right and people could live and prosper and worship they way they wanted to, without fear, would the people like they guy on news night stop what they are doing. I don't think they would. They would find something to pick at.

acw Yes this was more of a discussion and I will try and keep it to CB in future.

No no no Eupraxia!!  Please don't put discussions like this in CB - it will be entirely wasted there!  If you want a good meaty discussion, then please please put it in news!  I enjoy these debates but I am scared of CB and do not enter.  I for one would therefore miss these interesting threads.  Please don't move over to the dark side!!!

reportmonkey - I'm a bit lost - what was your post a response to?

During the 2 minute silence the other week, I didn't just think about the 50 odd who died in London, I thought about the thousands who have died around the world due to terrorism.

I think Marge that the chances are that the italian lawyer was appointed to defend the guy in question - after all a trial without a defense is a lynch mob. He was probably doing the best he could with very little material.

Personally though I think I'd have taken the tack that he couldn't get a fair trial in the UK rather than attempt to claim that the bombs were a political protest - it does sound a bit desperate doesn't it?

It also sounds as if by making that claim he is conceding that his client was the bomber and took the explosives in. Hope he's cheap

I don't know of many people who agreed with the war in Iraq (or indeed voted to keep the present PM in place) however, the thread is side tracked, there is no justification for these terrorist attacks (or the rantings of the pleb on Newsnight).  I mean, try shouting off about the righteousness of the roman catholic church in a muslim country and see what happens.

Yes, the world is a terrible place, people are starving and people are killing each other all over the globe.  But the issue here is a british one.  These people are not foreigner's or assylum seekers, they were born and bred on british soil - it is a british problem.

We can do what we can to reduce poverty and if we could I am sure, stop the war.  Justification for the war on our part was - to bring down Saddam Hussein, justification for the terrorist attacks - the Iraq war.  There will be no winners, but there sure will be plenty of losers on all sides of the water, politically, socially and humanitarian.

It's a cruel world, but it's everyones fault.

eupraxia: I too watched the interviews last night, their whole ethos is based on contractiction. they dont want democracy, but their family's run to shelter under it, they dont woant freedom of sppech , but happilty practice is in safety.....No more I say..the statemsnts they made are basicly treason...this country has got to get its act together and throw these people in Jail or preferbly out of the country, they are a disease and will spread.... I also thinks its time for a strong UK muslim figurehead leader to sort tis mess out.
