Most people regard horse racing as a harmless sport in which the animals are willing participants who thoroughly enjoy the thrill. The truth is that, behind the scenes, lies a story of immense suffering.

Approximately 18,000 foals are born into the closely-related British and Irish racing industries each year, yet only around 40% go on to become...

not sure of your point there eddie?

And DT- do you actually think your answers through before you get busy with your typy finger, or are you that busy sh!t stirring (hey, your words, not mine) that you'll say any old gumph to get a rise out of folk?
Tambo - RSPCA...you are joking!!!
or for the French, yum - actually horse meat is not that bad...a little stringy in comparison to beef as they don't have the natural fat of cows between the fibres.
ahh, i see, the latter- fair enough.
Quite honestly, I think I am anti any sport that uses animals for man's enjoyment or financial gain.
Evening BOO :o)
The national is great race, but it is time to make the course easier and shorter
'ow do Lottie :-)
Eddie, that's only fatally injured horses and because of their size they are trucked away. A horse putting its hoof down a rabbit hole can break a leg and that's without it being ridden.
No Boo - because despite the unfortunate incidents that do happen (and allowing that there are rogues in most business sectors), horse racing is very honourable and the owners/trainers/stable teams cherish their horses.

I would (i) question in this instance the prat who owned, trained, or the officials who permitted a hunter race with 'professional' jumps horses as that should have not happened.

And if you want to take statistics, then indeed hunting or cross-country as in a 3 day event should be looked at.

But then so should mountaineering, sailing, rugby (yes school injuries), and a multitude of sports.

So maybe the Labour Party had it right - disencourage all school sport on the basis of HSE - and a nice cost savings too to put forward to their major deficit programme recovery, no sports expenses at all.
Worse than the boltsmen are the terrier boys who follow the hunts. If the hounds don't get them, the terriers will. A fox can't go to the safety of the ground without being dug up again. These people are really perverted. Look how this gamekeeper gets his pleasure, how can people get pleasure from this?

excuse the (i)
I think it is interesting that fox hunting has been banned, badger baiting has been banned, even shooting magpies has been banned but man can still race horses to the point that those horses can fall down and break their necks in the name of money. I think horse racing will never be banned. There is too much money in it. It`s not just the Grand National that is fatal to horses. I went to the first Ladies Day at Kempton a couple of years ago and even though it was flat racing, two horses died.
If men want to take up dangerous sports then sobeit. It's their decision. Why should we force animals into situations that are dangerous for them. They have no choice.
what is your profession, jedi, just interested.
It`s always been the way though LL. We had cock fighting, dog fighting. Animals have always been used in `sports`
Jedi, can't watch that- it'll be heartbreaking i just know it.

you cannot compare sports where consenting adults are injured and animals that have no say in the matter are injured DT, its just a silly argument you've tried to use and frankly one not even worth you typing out. I already know your stance on animals DT, and I find it revolting. You neither care about their well being or have any respect for people who do, and indeed find it all highly amusing,so forgive me if i take your words with a massive pinch of salt.
That fox clip is really sick, I couldn't watch all of it - glad, very glad, they got the barsteward men who did it.
How do feel about working sheepdogs ,guide dogs , or the pet industry in general LL
sorry Boo, you do not know me and have not even an inkling of my opinion, experience, or whatever when it comes to handling and treatment when it comes to animals. Your comment is downright inflammatory.

It is about time that you realised there is one f of a difference between reality and here. AND to be clear, if you read my comments carefully, I do not condone the deciosn to release the Hunter yesterday; that was a crass mistake by somebody and I hope that the industry learns from it.

Boo - if you haven't worked out where I come from (apart from having grown up and lived in the countryside and had the privilege of living in several countries, cultures, politics, religions and the rest), it is that my position is one that will push for the rights of the majority in most cases, not the 2% of extremists in society at large, or those who argue for such counter-measures here on AB - and I classify horse racing and riding issues as well as blood sports into the 2 vs. 98% bracket too.

I could be inflammatory in saying townies versus countryside perhaps here too?
