Most people regard horse racing as a harmless sport in which the animals are willing participants who thoroughly enjoy the thrill. The truth is that, behind the scenes, lies a story of immense suffering.

Approximately 18,000 foals are born into the closely-related British and Irish racing industries each year, yet only around 40% go on to become...

Working sheepdogs, guidedogs and pets are not used for sporting reasons.
so you'll follow like a sheep with the majority DT? Ahhh the avatar makes sense then. God forbid someone else might have a differing opinion to you. If they do you'll happily take the p1ss out of them- out of the blue, like you did on dotty's thread earlier?

I do not like you DT, and im hoping the feelings mutual, so before we turn this thread of ladybirder's into a childish slanging match, lets just leave it be eh?
Fox hunting may have been banned but there are so many of the fraternity involved, it continues regardless. There are so many loopholes in that law, (despite Mr Blairs wife being a barrister) that prosecutions are dificult, and it is not enforced due again to the fraternity. Did you know, hunters can and do claim they accidentally killed a fox, and carry on regardless. How many other laws can you claim that the crime was an accident?

On the Isle of Wight, the wildlife officers actually attend hunts to watch.

Just 'cos animals have always been used in sports doesn't make it right surely?!
DT, I live in the countryside. Have done for the last 32 years, probably more rurally than you do. I was born and bred in LondonI have lived in cities and lived in different countries. I am trying to work out why you have to boast so much on this site!! You love putting people down it seems.
I agree with you Boo there - as in agree to disagree - as your position on a lo of matters is totally abhorrent to me. I have my areas that I do challenge society - as per a dislike of the censors stepping in on many a good thread here which threatens the speech here. That is minor though as AB is pretty irrelevant to life at large.

However, when it comes to society at large, be it politics, religious matters+sexual legal sights(though I have many areas of concern in those), racism, employment and all the rest, this country is floundering that the silent majority is not speaking its mind - and into this pot, I put the issues that you have raised here.

So lets agree to disagree and move on
lottie - I doubt the rural distance factor. an ex village of one house, one church and one farm.....and quite a distance to the nearest public or private service of any nature, other than the tricity and phone poles.
About the same then DT!!

that was my thinking too as from age zero I grew up in the "fields" - and probably the same as to countries lived in (9?) and the time in major cities around the world inc London (10 years of 56) - having said that, I tended to live in the outer suburbs if I could (the space thing!)
My thoughts on this are oh so not up for discussion.
It is an absolute, indefensible disgrace.
I won't even watch the damned race, let alone bet on it.
Nothing further to say.
Anyone live in an abandoned nuclear bunker on an island in the middle of the most remote lake in the country ?............
What annoys me is it's always the "poor me" bloodsports perverts who create the divides. "These townies, they know nothing about the country ways" "Everyone's just prejudice" "Fight prejudice - fight the ban". "They're all just jealous of our wealth".....

None of the above is true. It has never been rich v poor / town v country. Its about what constitutes entertainment. If you want to tear each other apart as consenting humans, I wouldn't personally care. Picking on something else, which cannot defend itself, is sick and any right thinking person with an inch of empathy can see that. If those creatures can't defend themselves then other humans have to do it. Simple.
Hi ttfn. Well said!! I kept well away from radios TV, etc. yesterday. Well out of ear shot of hearing anything about it.
The vast majority of country folk are against cruel sports. Most people who participate in hunting and shooting around here come up from the cities in fact and pay for the privilege of a jolly day out!!

And I hate The Countryside Alliance with a vengeance. They don't represent the country folk at all. They just want to keep there old outdated customs up. They make me sick!!
if friday night is music night then sunday night must be treehuggers night
Treehuggers!!? What are you talking about? How stupid.
"Treehuggers" is that the same as "those do-gooders"?
Night all - going back to watch the Masters but I guess there will be a storm of debate about this and golf courses at large for (i) the pesticides used (ii) the use of land for leisure (iii) the number of folk that get killed by lightning each year (which is actually a fair number) (iv) rights of access to all and sundry to walk across the hallowed greens with their high heels and corps boots (v) animals do not have right of access (vi) urbanites buying up all the tithed cottages and distorting the property market.

I give up

Well you're like terriers on here, keep coming back to this thread to have another go. Good on you. B00, Lottie, Jedi and all who have defended our animals can I say thank goodness for people like you who do care passionately about their welfare. I feel exactly the same. I chose not to look at a couple of the videos because my imagination does it all for me. Maybe later. Maybe not. I too can't see much changing anytime soon, as others have said, too much money to be made in exploiting animals. How disgusting in this day and age in a first world country.
