Ideal breed would be a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel PROVIDED you get one from a reputable breeder who has their dogs MRI scanned for syringomyelia and also heart tested for MVD. They have superb temperaments and an easy to care for coat, they are easily trainable for obedience, agility, showing or just as a lovely companion.
Get in touch with one of the breed clubs and ask for their recommended puppy list.

thanks for the advice. it would definately come from a proper breeder as our bulldog did as a previous dog we owned was bought out of the local paper and had many health problems. lesson learned. we were actually thinking about a king charles
Lankeela has just given the very breed I was going to suggest. I can't think of a better one for your daughter. It's an affectionate ,loyal, breed and will be very much 'her' dog. And as Lankeela indicates, it's a quick learner and can make an entertaining companion..
