how do i deter birds from perching on my fence? my neighbour has lots of feeders and although I do not mind birds I find it a pain having to wash down my decking etc as it is very unsightly... I have a young family and am concerned

Unfortunately whatever you put on the fence will just give them more things to perch on, the littlest birds can perch on a single stem. I have a similar problem, except for me its the birds making the dogs bark. However its a vicious circle because the dogs do scare away the birds. I suppose you could get a bird scarer like they use in fields, going off bang every couple of minutes, but that would probably drive you more mad than the birds. Ever thought about getting a cat.........

Staple thin strip of foil to fence.....so they blow......that will keep birds off!

If you get one of those patio vacuum cleaners you can clean it in 5 minutes after anyone has has eaten there.
No crumbs = nothing of interest there for birds.
You can span some thin steel wire (sold as lacing wire) along the top of the fence, put 1" blocks under it so it is lifted up and forces the birds to sit on the wire, they don't like it so will mostly avoid it.

Or yeah, you can get a cat and have your kids playing with cat cr@p in the garden. I know what I'd rather have.
