When I kept ferrets we always kept a vasectomised hob (male) to bring the jills (female) out of season.

This got me thinking, why don't they vasectomise dogs and other animals?

Dogs and cats can be vasectomised but, particularly in cats, it doesn't stop the behaviour issues....toms will still spray, male dogs will still chase bitches.
As woofgang says, it's possible but, in domestic situation it's much easier and effective to castrate.

But a vasectomised dog could be used to bring another dog out of season and it could still be shown.
I expect it's an issue of cost Ratso. quicker n cheaper to whip off the nuts than fossick around with tubes and stitches.

Its done very frequently on ferrets!

Mosaic, im glad the surgeon wasn't thinking that way when he had his scalpel around my tackle!!
Snigger titter snarf snarf
I've heard terrible things about wot was done out east back int' day when the emperor needed eunuchs....
Kitchen table, machete and a deep fryer (for hygienically preserving the bits)
does it work the same with dogs as ferrets in terms of ending a season? Most owners who show dogs wouldn't want to sterilise a show prospect because of stud duties.

Woofgang, I think that once a bitch is mated she comes out of season, I'm just more curious than anything.
any mammal inc. yourself can be vascetomised...."put up and keep it up - or lose it," being the motto.

I already have been DT. I was just wondering why the only animal I have heard of being vasectomised is a ferret.
Nothing to do with vasectomies, but one of my brothers had two gay male ferrets. The submissive one castrated himself by rubbing his bits off against the wire of the cage.

^^^^ Ouch!!!!!! I used to do ferret rescue and often had up to 50 ferrets but never known that, sounds gruesome!!
mrs_o ... we can only hope that Philpott uses the same method as your brother's ferret
Question Author
Philpott should have his chewed off by a ferret!
Ratter I think that a bitch may come out of season if the mating is successful and she conceives but not otherwise. The act itself isn't usually enough. Also in a stray pack, bitches may well mate more than once while receptive so you can get a litter with multiple fathers, indicating that even one successful mating may not be enough to draw the season to an end. Bitches tend not to be receptive until halfway or further in the heat when the blood flow has mostly tailed off to clear discharge so not much benefit to the bitch owner. If an owner was going to keep a vasectomised male to "pleasure" the bitches, they would still need to be kept away from entire males. I don't honestly see any benefit to it.

Thanks woof, that has answered my question, I was never considering in, I was just curious,The main reason it is done to ferrets is the jills are very vulnerable to pyometra if not mated.
I too keep ferrets, and have a vasectomised hob too. This is only neccesary in ferrets as the Jill will continue in oestrus until mated, a castrated hob does not have the urge due to lack of hormones.
bitches oestrus cycle will run its course whether it is mated or not, so it does not need to be mated as a Jill does.
best thing for any animal is for them to be castrated or spayed unless they are to be bred from, this will help to reduce the risk of future reproductive tract problems later in life, and curb the hormonal problems involved for the animal due to non mating/pregnancy.
I do have a degree in animal management too :)
