Why are there so many rubbish adverts out there? I mean who thinks these up, and how on earth do they think it will help them sell the product / service etc.

Some of them out there are really good, and you can tell a lot of thought has gone into them, but others...

...you wonder how they even get thought up, let alone put on the TV!

Totally agree! For example I would rather buy a Honda than any other car purely for the fact that their adverts are well thought out and keep our attention. Unlike the guy who jumps down a mountain to say "nice car mate" to an astra. eBay adverts are quite witty aswell. I HATE compensation, insurance and beauty product adverts with a vengeance!!!!
those silly adverts are the ones that get spoken about that is how they sell the product, you start speaking about a certain advert I give you an answer I look at it then I tell someone and so on its simple
Don't forget those insipid loan adverts pushing a loan at you for only 6 billion % interest over 100 years! (Well, got to exaggerate a bit!)
That picture loan advert bloody annoys me the most. T**t man with his stupid wife videoing his conversation on the phone, then the other ad, with his also T**t neighbour..........grrrrrrr..........The Halifax ads and the Norwich Union ones.........Grrrr.......
bob57 raises a point that often comes up in threads like this - yes, the ad may be awful, but that makes you remember the product. Hmmm. While I agree that you tend to remember the product, I'm not convinced that it makes you any more likely to buy or use it - I'd have thought you'd be more likely to boycott it.

Anyway, I agree with the nominations of loan and compensation ads. I'd also add the Activia ad - you know the ones. Mum/friend squeaks "ooh, I'm feeling a bit bloated", daughter/friend launches into sales pitch, "try Activia, it's loaded with something called digestivum bilbobaggins tarantula, which can really help to keep that bloated feeling at bay" (I'm guessing this means it gives you a fart like a trombone), mum/friend 'cheekily' sneaks off with the whole pack, daughter/friend smiles and raises her eyes to the Heavens in an "I dunno, what is she like?" kind of way.




Whilst I agree that you may remember the product from an advert that annoys you, that is not the whole point of the advert. If the advert annoys you to such an extent that you don't want anything to do with the company or brand, you probably won't buy and it is therefore counter productive. I sometimes wonder how such bloody awful adverts are sold by the advertising company to the client, it can't be on price alone, surely.


I also hate Americanisms in adverts for British products, such as Duracell calling something a flashlight instead of a torch. If the advert is internationally shown they only have to dub one word. Also why do nearly all beauty products have to feature an American woman telling British women how to look beautiful. Whilst there are beautiful American women, they've got their fair share of mingers as well. My favourite beauty product company is Schwarzkopf. How many women realise that literally translated into English, it means Blackhead (how alluring). Anyway that's my rant over, thanks for your patience.

Anyone noticed that they've taken the line out of the Activa ad that went something like "I feel like a house"? Presumably there were complaints about it being too "houseist"!

Personally I hate the really, really cheap ads. Freederm - if you're just going to put 5 kids in front of a blank background to dance a bit, at least pick 5 who can do that in time to the music. And how cheap is dubbing a foreign advert when all you need is one person talking straight to camera? See the Vagisil ad - would it really have been expensive to re-shoot it?

Some companies employ their own art directors, who quite franky couldn't find their arse with both hands, let alone have a worthy opinion when it comes to creative input (belive me I've worked with a few!) Others really dont want to have to pay for the better brains out there and you end up with some of the ***** you see. Its like anything. You gets what you pay for.

I hate it when you see a really good advert once or twice, and then after that they only ever show the crappy 30 second version. So for anyone who never saw it you spend ages having to describe it to them, and getting excited every time it comes on, only to be frustrated again.


Speaking of cr*p adverts though, HOW annoying is Cilit Bang?!?!
