Now it's against the rules to post stuff unrelated to the topic heading, how do I get a message to someone to tell them to look at something I've written elsewhere? Chatterbank won't do because the person I want to alert rarely goes there - and the posts move so quickly anyway, he's highly unlikely to spot me amongst it all. A dilemma!! In the absence of PMs, I'm wondering if a separate message board for short personal messages would be helpful?

thats sounds like a good suggestion :)

Yes, precisely Cazzz.
Find a question that person has started and reply to it?

"Now it's against the rules to post stuff unrelated to the topic heading,"

Doesn't seem to bother most people ... just go for it. ;-)

No Naz. Sneaking around trying to get a message to someone smacks of passing notes behind the teacher's back - and we're all grown up now, aren't we? We need a proper legitimate facility to enable us to pass messages to each other - but I think it should be restricted to one or two lines - otherwise there's every likelihood that it would turn into another chatterbank. :o)
I don't think a sentence addressed to another user - accompanied perhaps by a brief apology to the OP of the thread - is out of order. Conversations that wander off in all directions may be a nuisance but I don't think brief 'points of information' get banned, or deserve to.
It's sounds ok but there's no guarantee the person would see your message in the FAO section any more than there would be if you just put it in a normal thread - or am I misunderstanding?
maybe the PM facility that used to exist could be reinstated; but I expect there was some good reason why it was removed.

jno, your sentiment is absolutely right in my opinion, but someone had a post removed for simply saying 'hello' so I'm not so sure your confidence is well placed. I think it's called treading on eggshells.
and I bet there is an over-riding legal perspective on this

Ludwig, as far as I understand it, it's now against the rules to put it in a normal thread. Normal threads have to stick to the subject and the topic in hand. As I said, someone had a post removed for simply saying 'hello'. That, apparently, is now only acceptable in Chatterbank.

jno, that would be good, but I don't know if it's planned. Several people have asked.
Question Author
DT, I think not.
Would FAO... not work?
that fao os a great idea, they should also add another button or something to say whether that person has seen it or not...?
"We need a proper legitimate facility to enable us to pass messages to each other"

We call that email, it's been around for decades. ;-))))
Question Author
Sandy, yes, but as far as I can ascertain it's only allowed in Chatterbank - which is fine for Chatterbankers. What about the rest? Believe it or not, there are an awful lot of people on here who never venture into Chatterbank.
but naz i dont want to post my email on here.... for everyone to see, if they have PM it would b better.
agree with naz - sometimes its a shame not to be able to make direct contact esp. with those fol you hit it off with.
Question Author
No, Naz. That's too personal. I definitely wouldn't put my email address on here for all and sundry to see, and potentially use.
sorry - typos there - fol = of
PM is a bad idea on a site that is an obvious target for trolls. It's hard to police.

It really is that simple.
