Sometimes when I go on a website like Tripadviser, a box pops up to ask me if I want to log in using my Google account.

I always close the box because I am not sure what it is offering to do and I value my privacy.

Should I use this feature, or continue to dodge it?

Is there a way to stop this annoying pop up?

I refuse to use it, much as I love Google services I don't want it linked to everything I do.

I have several email addresses for different things and use throwaway email addresses if I'm unlikely to log in again.

You can disable the pop up

1. Go to "My Account" : "Security" ( https://myaccount.google.com/security ;)

2. Click on "See all connections" link in "Your connections to third party apps & services"

3. Click on the gear at the top of the "Third party apps & services" page

4. Disable the "Signing in with Google" prompt

Dodge it until you want to log in. I always use an incognito window until I'm ready to sign in to anything ...

It may be just me Hopkirk   ...   but I try to avoid any of the sites being able to link me to an account with my details lodged. I also avoid all things google like the plague(which it is). You are right to value some privacy. I also avoid tripadviser( used to post there) because they are inaccurate most of the time and invasive all of the time. Trust your instincts. Don't know about the pop up, though I suspect that it may well be one of the Powr popups that we have blitzing us here on AB.  If so they are designed so that you cannot avoid them without    ...    you're ahead of me now I bet, signing up to the pop up request.

It's actually helpful if you want to log in with your Google email address, as you can do so more securely and without needing a password. But if you don't want to log in with your Google email address then it's intrusive.

Thanks all. I will follow Barry's instructions on how to stop it offering. I know Google should be secure, but I don't like the idea of giving companies permission to share information on me, or give extra routes for wrong uns to exploit me.

Togo, I am very cynical of any reviews. On Tripadviser I ignore the good reviews and go straight for the 3 start middle ones. I think if you read enough of them you get a good idea. Some of the whingers make me laugh though. One I just read complained that you couldn't smoke or vape on the hotel balcony.

I ignore it. I don't need all and sundry combining data they have on me.

The trick with TripAdvisor is to figure out whether the reviewer is someone like you or not. For example, some people would like noisy entertainments every evening, other people would hate it (like me) - I'd only like reviewers from people like me. Also, only reviews in the last year or so are relevant, as the world has changed since Covid.

Thanks Barry, I've disabled the prompt.

Now you just have to do it with all the other dodgy sites you visit. 😉
