Since I am committed to driving 57 miles each way every Monday until the end of March to pick-up my grandchildren, their mum is at Hull university training to become a teacher and earn some cash following divorce, I am rather worried by the thought of X-country and snow. Mulling over snow-tyres - but it costs such a lot. :(

I always ensure I have a 4x4 these days. I have been snowed in twice in the last 7 years. Purchasing a new car with that capability is an expensive option but living up North in your beautiful neck of the woods I would consider snow chains as a cheaper alternative.
Apparently it is compulsory to have alternative snow tyres in Sweden for every registered car.

Thanks all who have given opinions. I live in a village which is 6 hilly miles from a major route (and I mean hilly - one is scary for anyone with vertigo - I was in a whiteout last year in between the 2 valleys and had to stop) so just getting to the A64 can be a problem.
Daughter cannot drop children off at mine on the way to Hull for similar reasons - also they have, by law, to be at school. School is Boston Spa area - very near the A1(M) and 50-odd miles away. Along with my sister and others doing different days, I have committed to collecting them on Mondays and holding on to them until mum arrives about 5.30 - she can use the M62. This is quite bad enough, given that I find night driving difficult so will have to sleep over once it gets dark and that means leaving Mr.J2 on his own - heart condition and he's 86 - which I don't like to do. At the very least I will stock up on food for him for a few days in case.
I always have Mars bars, water, salt and newspapers in the car in Winter (because I grew up in the Pennines). Retrocop - I wish I could afford a 4x4, but I can't. One used to get me out of trouble going Bradford/Halifax every Winter. I'll just have to cross my fingers, I think. I can't think that snow chains are really OK for that long a journey are they? Tyres might be my only choice.
