Just a heads up to the ed and techies - while checking out a few threads, answerbank forwarded me to a page stating Microsoft had detected spyware. This was a fake report and the site was based in Russia.

I naturally closed down mybrowser without clicking on anything. If any other ABers get this, "DO NOT CLICK ON LEAVE PAGE", this is as good as saying ok to download malware, instead use task manager to close your browser and the reopen it to start a new session.

To the uninitiated squarebear, what and where is task manager?
Thanks for that squarebear.
Control Alt Del on mine brings up a menu on which Task Manager is one of the options, vakayu
Ctl+Alt+Delete take you to task manager.
Yeh had the same about 1800hrs.

Try holding the Control + Alt + Delete keys altogether. This usually either brings up Task Manager or at least an option to choose it.

Then you should click on your browser listed in the window that comes up (Firefox/Internet Explorer/Chrome) and click on the "end task" button.

Not sure where the site gets its ads from but you would hope a little more quality assurance would go into them either from the site itself or the ad provider.
Thank-you boxtops, eccles and squarebear for the info, best to be forewarned?
Question Author
Definitely. The malware site stops you from trying to close your browser down and if you are foolish enough to click on "leave page", it will most likely download all sorts of nasties to your PC.
wow, square, just did that and what a blank screen and then getting back on here!! spooky stuff for us poor folk who are not techies

Have you just had it as well alba? Ed - are you there?
This seems to be still around - it happened to me when I was on Answerbank this afternoon. Closed down browser as suggested and ran a scan with my virus checker - no problems detected.
just another reason I use adblocker (Sorry ed)
