What effect does depth have on flotation? Obviously very heavy / dense objects settle on the bed of the ocean, light ones float; but are some objects likely to remain somewhere in between?

Can anyone explain why, when inputting a hyphen, a long one appears on screen, but if it later deleted, then replaced by depressing the same key, a shorter one appears?
