Do leaves photosynthesise on both sides?
Perhaps they can do this where the leaves are semi transparent.

Yes they do they have chlorophyll on both sides to make use of any reflected light if you cover the top surface of the leaf it will usually go yellow simply because not enough light gets to the underside but there is chloropyll there.
