Captain Farrell / Whiskey in the Jar lyrics

Can anybody tell me who is/was Captain Farrell, who appears in the 'Thin Lizzy' (or 'Metallica') song 'Whiskey in the Jar? I got frustrated with Googling him.... Thank you!
