Can anybody tell me who is/was Captain Farrell, who appears in the 'Thin Lizzy' (or 'Metallica') song 'Whiskey in the Jar?

this traditional irish (drinking) song predates thin lizzy, metallica or any other modern rendition, and may have been written as early as the 18th century. in common with other trad songs it has mutated into several versions, and in some the official who gets robbed is captain pepper. for more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whiskey_in_the_Jar

so "captain farrell" might never have been, except in the lyrics of the song
