Computer Speed

Please advise - XP on Broadband - my download speed is 8248Kbps, upload speed 460Kbps Good or average? They seem pretty good to me.

I am using XP Home. Regularly I receive the yellow icon near the clock, telling me that updates are available. But when I download the updates, my Google page also changes to a more recent version...
