Why is it that nowadays we have to buy a complete wiper blade assembly with lots of un-needed plastic rather than just getting the required replacement length of rubber to fit yourself?

You can buy wiper rubbers at almost any auto shop. Just cut it to length and fit it. I always do this.

you can buy blades for as little as a pound so why go to all that extra trouble, and dont forget the actual blade wears out as well not just the rubber. so whats the point of fitting a new rubber to a crappy worn out blade.
