Someone is in a shop and pays by chip and pin, and the person behind him in the queue can see what his pin was. The person behind him snatches the wallet or handbag outside the shop and clears out the person's bank account, would banks offer any protection or compensation?

I'm with Jake on this one. My old debit card had been in and out of cashpoints so much it reduced my signature to an unrecognisable 'stain'. In the 12 months of using it, only one cashier asked for another form of I.D. Chip and Pin will never be fool proof (as my earlier question about Chip and Pin / Shell proves). But it's a damn site safer than trusting a scribble on the back of a piece of plastic.
