I recently bought a new iPhone, and have received this message from 'Apple'.

//This is the final message to inform from 14 - August - 2015 that you have failed to completed your Apple ID details. Under "Know your Customer (KYC)" legal ruling Apple is required by guidelines to perform a validation of your information, failure to complete this validation will result in deletion of your iCloud within the next two working business days.

Update your iTunes ID

To prevent the deletion of your Apple & iCloud proceed to your iCloud ID profile page before the deadline.

I think you are right - stay well away - I do a lot of reading on this type of subject and my conclusion is, with the regularity of hacking complaints, not to have anything to do with any form of cloud storage.
That's a scam.
I use icloud storage but not for confidential stuff.
