I graduated last year and since then have been in a bit of a crappy job, not really knowing what to with my life. I go on holiday in 4 weeks and this was the deadline I had set myself for sorting myself out. I am away for 2 weeks and would like any advice on how I can sort my head out and be productive about moving onwards and upwards when I get back...any inspiring books or ideas would be most welcome please!

I would suggest that while you're away on holiday make a list of what you want, positives and another list about the things you want to change, negatives then make your chioce of what you really want to do, and what you need to change.
For an inspiring book, try "What colour is your parachute?". It has some great advice on job hunting and career planning.

  • List your skills

  • List things you don't want to do (i.e. working unsocial hours, which will immediately rule out a lot of professions)

  • Think about the older working people you know. Which of them are doing jobs they feel passionate about? These won't necessarily be suitable for you but may give you some idea of roles they find fulfilling and rewarding.

  • Talk to as many people as possible while you're on holiday. Find out what jobs they do, whether they enjoy them, what the downsides are.

  • Come back and be prepared to accept that you are still as undecided as when you went away. Some people end up most of their lives doing a job they don't really like. Maybe you just have to be prepared to experiment a little and realise that no job is perfect all the time.
