If a person has bought an item on credit/higher purchase, and leaves for Europe for good without telling the company/seller, can they be traced being in the EU.

I know it would be difficult, if it was Australia or America, but not about. Europe.

I am not sure what happens if someone moves abroad but my experience tells me that debt collectors rarely seem to give up here in the UK.

15 years ago, the other half to my semi was owned by a chap who moved out to the Middle East to work on various oil contracts. He was an old friend and he left me a key and gave me permission to show prospective tenants around and even vet them for him, on the basis that if I thought they were going to be good neighbours, then they would also be good tenants for him.

It worked out very well for years until one couple did a runner owing huge sums of various store charge cards. It was estimated that they went into every major High Street Debt shop and started cards with them all. They had Boots Cards, Debenhams, John Lewis, etc, etc. They were always having expensive household items delivered.

Collectors continued to call for nearly 3 years, even when new tenants were in place. This was 5 years ago, and the present person who now lives there
( he bought it from my friend) still receives letters addressed to the previous tenants !
My OHs cousin lived here for a while. He ordered loads of stuff from catalogues. Long after he moved out we started receiving debt collectors letters. I just opened the letters and wrote to the companies. They stopped quite quickly.

Thanks for the replys, and the reason I asked is that my son knows somebody who works at a large electrical store, who told him that a growing number of Europeans who have worked here for a few years, were buying expensive laptops and other stuff, and disapearing back to their home countrys.

I suppose the company would find it to expensive to try and find the people.
agree umm

[ I think we have agreed on this before - sundry children open the post purely by mistake, and you see the demanding letters and write to tell them to stop. It is important to do this to prevent default CCJs which can be a proverbial pain in the posterior ]

as for Europe I have never had anyone flee there....
